Can you Tell Me How to Get To Sesame Street?

If I had to create a bumper sticker that modeled my philosophy for life, it would be "can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?"

Stupid, I know. I'm a mom, sue me. But, the thing is, everyone on Sesame Street is happy all the time. Even if they fight, cry, feel scared, are unsure of themselves - someone is always there to help them figure it out or make them feel better.

Everybody has a place to live. Apartments are just as good as trash cans.

Everybody eats food - and it's healthy but yummy so nobody is fat. And even if they are a little fat, it's okay because people accept each other for who they are.

Families are diverse. It doesn't matter if you live with your mom, your gradma, am adopted parent, a monster, or a snuffleupagus, you have a family that loves you.

Color isn't an issue. Red monsters befriend orange monsters. Ethnicity isn't an issue. Grouches rommate with worms. Money isn't an issue. The only reason anyone talks about it is to learn to count, otherwise, everything is free.

On top of everything else, there is learning. The best learning takes place via singing and dancing. Even the haters end up enjoying their education because something new is always being presented in a manner which makes everyone ecstatic.

On days when I'm really angry, and many of those times it might be about nothing at all or something so unjustified it's embarrasing, I remind myself that there are places and people in the world that find the best in life. They sing and dance and love each other. They eat, drink, be merry. They live, laugh, love. Call it whatever you wish but the truth is that life is too short for us to be anything but content. If you don't like something about your life, well then go out and change it!

"Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street" is a call for action. It's a request that you find the silver lining in every cloud and face every situation with a smile. Such a simple message, such a hard thing to do.

At some point today, when my 2-year old has hit me in the face and told me "stop it mommy" for the tenth time, when my husband has opened a string cheese and left the wrapper on the counter because that's where he thinks trash goes, when my mother has called me to tell me that if I take my kid to McDonald's one more time I'm going to hell, I'll take a deep breath and remember that everything on Sesame Street is wonderful. And it can be in my house too, if I let it.

  1. Awww! I really like your bumper sticker. First I was a little confused becuase it was about seseme street, but your explanation made me understand perfectly. My favorite part of your writing was the part about color. I agree with that statement the most becuse I cant believe that to this day we still have racism in our society. I dont know how its possible for someone to be judged based on their skin color. People should be sociable and friendly to everyone no matter if you were blue or green.

  3. I can relate to your article. Life can easily get overwhelming by all of the little things that go wrong from day to day. I especially like where you point out how finding the good in each day is a very simple idea, but yet so hard to do. I think holding on to offenses, and the things that out of our control keep us emotionally bound inside. Being thankful and enjoying life today, no matter what we are going through in the moment, is the true key to happiness, and the real riches in this life.

I think I see a pattern or two throughout most of the class's bumper sticker articles of looking at the positives in life, and trying to stay there. I like that people my age are aware of the "silver linings" in life.

  4. Everytime I watch my old sesame street videos, it reminds me of the things I forgot how much I appreciated. It reminds me of the innocence that we all had when we were little kids. I miss that a lot and I think your bumper sticker is a great way to remind people of that message.

I think that in our world today, we analyze things too much to the point that we have to criticize and nitpick at everything. Sesame street shows us that life is more simple and happy when we accept the things that are in front of us as the way they are.

I really like the aspect of your bumper sticker. I think I might go watch those sesame street videos again. :o)

  5. I really liked your philosophy. It is great to remember our inner childlike nature! Sometimes we just need to slow down and try to forget about the stresses of modern day life. It is easy to get caught up in the rat race but we can all remember a much simpler time in our life full of fun and energy. By being aware of our emotions we can take ourselves back to Sesame Street...or Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. :)

  7. I never knew sesame street could have a deeper meaning to it. You clearly showed a wonderful veiw point on this bumper sticker. I grew up watching the show along with barney. The show seems so free and everyone's friendly to eachother. Sometimes i wish the real world could change and be like that. It could if people just gave it a chance or if everyone would of grown up watching the show. I really loved the comment, "If you don't like something about your life, well then go out and change it!" It makes me think.

  8. I don't know how you could come up with something from a kid's show and make it deeper then what it seems. Good job on this. We should all follow this example
